The Porcelain Doll story

I thought you might be interested in how the dolls are made. It is a lengthy procedure so bare with me. First you must select the correct mold for the doll you want to make. Then the slip (liquid clay) is poured into the mold. It has to sit until the correct thickness is achieved. The remaining liquid is poured off and the doll removed from the mold and left to dry. Then it is soft fired. (fired in the kiln at a low temperature). Now it is time to begin the cleaning process. All the mold marks (seams) must be removed carefully along with any other imperfections. The doll is very fragile at this point so it must be handled very carefully. The doll is then returned to the kiln to be hard fired( at a high temperature). The next step is to scrub the pieces and and sand off any bumps that might be there. Now you apply the skin tones and return to the kiln to be fired once more. Now you are ready to apply the shadow under the brow, the color lid shadow, and the cheek color. Again, the doll must be fired. Now it is time to put in the tiny little hairs in the eye brow, and the lower lashes, reapply the cheek color if necessary and apply the first color to the lip. This gets to be an old story but it must be fired again. If there is enough color on the lip you are all set. Usually it requires a second coat and fire again. Now you are ready to set the eyes in place, apply the false upper lashes. Now at this point the doll must be strung together. Then the pate is glued to the top of the head and the wig is applied at long last. This completes the doll except for shoes and clothing. I hope you enjoyed the DOLL story, if you want to know more or are interested in a doll you may contact me at
